Introduction To System Engineering

Written by Graham Stoney

System Engineering is a broad term for a hierarchically structured approach to the design of complicated systems involving multiple electrical and/or software components. The key benefits of adopting a System approach are reduced system development times, fewer integration problems, shorter time-to-market and ultimately greater customer satisfaction.

The System Engineering process is fundamentally requirements-driven, and biased towards top-down design. All requirements in the system are ultimately derived from stakeholder requirements via system requirements analysis. These requirements then percolate down to the system components via system architectural design and into component detailed design and implementation.
