Most of my software engineering experience is in the field of embedded systems, but many of the tips here are good for virtually any software environment. A lot of my advice is interdependent: you get the best results when you do everything together. For example, not using assertions liberally will dramatically reduce the test coverage of your automated regression tests. Bear in mind that your software development environment is just one discipline within a broader System Engineering environment all of which work harmoniously together.
