If you're a Software Engineer, you have no idea how lucky you are. The Software Engineering Body Of Knowledge (SWEBOK) is a guide from a panel of IEEE Software Engineering experts to just about everything you need to know about your field; and it's available on the web, for free. While it doesn't have the weight of an international standard, the SWEBOK is structured according to ISO 12207 and adds a wealth of practical information that goes way beyond the scope of the standard. If you haven't read it yet, you have no idea what you're missing out on. I recommend you study the SWEBOK in detail and follow its guidance. There's a wealth of knowledge in there, so it will take some time to digest. Form a study group at your workplace and meet weekly or fortnightly to discuss what it says. Aim to cover a chapter each month, and within a year you will have transformed the Software Engineering environment of your entire organisation. Or read it yourself and present a monthly seminar series to your colleagues covering one chapter each month. Reading the SWEBOK, sharing what it says with your colleagues and using it's wisdom in your own work is the fastest way I can think of to become known as a Software Engineering guru in your organisation.
