Noise Problems

Many mixed system designers encounter the problem of “noise”. I sometimes have clients who have “completed their design or development, but just have a noise problem to sort out”. This is often symptomatic of poor design, and points to larger design issues.

You need to design for noise immunity, just like you need to design for testability, if you want your product released in a timely fashion. Noise problems don't just occur out of nowhere; they are the result of design choices, or the lack thereof. Designing for noise immunity means understanding the potential causes of system noise, and designing them out of your system. If you're using a single-ended data acquisition system, for instance, you need to be able to demonstrate that your signal levels aren't susceptible to environmental noise that would be rejected more easily had you chosen a dual-ended system.
