Follow Good Engineering Practice, Not Just The Regulations

In any regulated industry, it's easy to fall into the trap of justifying doing things just because the regulations say so. It's better to understand the motivation behind the regulatory requirements; and generally they come down to what's best practice anyway.

So follow them because it's good practice, not because you have to. This can make quite a difference. For example, when you're doing a design review, do it because you want to improve the quality of the design; not because the regulations say you have to. The latter can end up becoming a rubber-stamping exercise, which negates the benefit of doing the review.
